Seven Pomsky Potty Training Tips

Introduction – Pomsky Potty Training

Pomsky potty training is a very important subject.

In this article we are going to cover a couple key tips to help you potty train your Pomsky:

  • Pomskies go when they got to go

Pomsky Potty Training: Pomskies Go When They Got To Go

Just like a baby, when a puppy has to go potty they will go potty! So, to start with your potty training, you have to get your Pomsky outside before they go potty inside. This means constantly being with your new puppy when you first bring them home. Jo Taylor from Moonlit Pomskies, a POA expert breeder, recommends being with your new puppy 24/7, watching for potty signals, and confining them to a small room that has access to the potty location.

It is your job to make sure they go outside! If you fail, then blame yourself.

Pomsky Potty Training: Reward Proper Potty Location

The best way to show your Pomsky where you want them to go potty is to show them the correct place and reward them.

The best way to do this is to take your Pomsky out when they need to go, and give them praise when they go. Jo Taylor from Moonlit Pomskies says on our Pomsky 101 podcast episode about potty training to “Make a fuss…they need to know that they are pleased with them!”

You will be amazed how quickly they will learn if you give them praise and a nice treat for going potty in the right place. For example, if you use a little piece of cheese as a treat, your Pomsky will start looking for the cheese treat after only a few times going potty in the correct place.

Pomsky Potty Training: Do Not Punish

You should NEVER punish your Pomsky when they potty in the house. This is backwards training and it does not work.

You should never rub a puppy’s nose in their mess it to teach it a lesson. This does not work. A puppy’s nose is 1000 times more sensitive than a humans and this will never teach them not to do it again. They will not know what they did wrong, instead of correcting the behavior the Pomsky will just potty in the house out of sight next time. This does not teach them to potty outside.

Rather than punishing your puppy, if they have an accident in the house simply clean it up and move on with your day. If you catch your Pomsky in the act of going potty in the house, calmly and gently get your Pomsky to go outside where they can finish pottying outside. Reward your Pomsky when they finish going potty outside.

Pomsky Potty Training: Pomsky Puppies Go Frequently

When your Pomsky is a puppy, they will need to go potty more frequently. Set a timer and take your Pomsky out to potty on a regular schedule, sometimes as often as every 30 minutes to every hour (until you determine how long they can hold it).

Younger puppies, when they are around eight weeks old, have a very small bladder. So you will likely need to take your puppy out to potty every 30 minutes or so. You must be vigilant and set a time to take your puppy potty.
Puppy potty training requires consistency, much like maintaining a beautiful and safe outdoor space for your pet to play. Just as your Pomsky needs regular potty breaks, ensuring that your backyard is both practical and aesthetically pleasing can be equally important. Pomsky Potty Training: Puppies Go Potty After Meals

Puppies will often need to go potty after a meal, often within 60 seconds after eating. Always take your puppy out to potty right after they eat.

You should also take your Pomsky puppy outside to potty as soon as they wake up and right before bed at night.

Pomsky Potty Training: Use A Potty Word

You should associate a word with your puppy’s potty time. Associate a word that everyone in the house sticks to such as “go potty”.  Much like command training, your puppy will hear this word and know it’s time to go out to potty.

Pomsky Potty Training: Watch If Your Puppy Does Not Go

Be aware if your puppy does not go potty when you take them out. If your Pomsky does not go right when you take them out, be aware that they may need to relieve themselves soon.

Restrict the Pomsky to a smaller area that is easier to monitor, where you can easily watch them, and take them out when you see signs that they are ready to potty.
