That request may sound blunt, but we get asked this question a lot. Someone spots a "Pomsky" in a pet store window priced at $1,000 and wonders if it's a good deal. The answer is always no.

This isn't a personal grudge against pet stores. They serve a valuable purpose for food, treats, and toys. But a pet store is not where you want to buy your Pomsky. If you're serious about raising a happy and healthy Pomsky, please work with a reputable breeder.

Why a Breeder Beats a Pet Store

Reason 1: You Know What You Are Getting

Pet store puppies come with a long list of unknowns. You don't know the parents, which means you don't know the size the puppy will grow to, the temperament, or the hereditary health conditions the puppy might carry. You don't know how the puppy was raised, if it was socialized, or even (with a designer breed like the Pomsky) whether it's truly a Pomsky at all.

A landmark study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found that dogs obtained as puppies from pet stores showed significantly more aggression toward family members, unfamiliar people, and other dogs. They also had greater fear responses, more separation-related problems, and more house-soiling issues than puppies from responsible breeders.

None of these problems exist when you buy from a reputable Pomsky breeder, because a good breeder does three things a pet store cannot:

1. Knows the lineage: a Pomsky breeder hand-selects the dam (Pomeranian) and sire (Siberian Husky) with health testing and DNA verification. 2. Knows each puppy: pet store puppies sit behind glass with staff who barely know them. A breeder is there from the moment the puppy is born, feeding, socializing, and training. Chree of Mountain Shadow Pomskies explains: "The breeder has spent many many hours with the puppies and knows the parents well. The breeder talks to the family and matches a puppy's personality and energy level with the owners. This makes more of a custom fit to help with the bonding process, and makes it less likely the puppy will be re-homed."

3. Socializes properly: socialization between weeks 3 and 14 shapes a dog's lifetime behavior. Sharlee of Chinook Pomskies adds that puppies removed from their mothers too early miss critical lessons: "When a dog lives in a home, the mother will teach her puppies to potty away from where they sleep and eat. This helps make potty training much easier."

Reason 2: You Know Where Your Pomsky Comes From

Pet stores are not required to work with reputable breeders. According to the Humane Society of the United States, the vast majority of pet store puppies come from puppy mills: commercial breeding facilities that mass-produce puppies for profit while cutting corners on health, socialization, and welfare. The Humane Society estimates there are at least 10,000 puppy mills operating in the US, many of them unlicensed.

Please don't support puppy mills. With a Pomsky breeder you can visit before you buy, tour the environment your puppy is raised in, see the parents, and ask any question you want. Sharlee of Chinook Pomskies recommends this exact process: "With a breeder you can see (in-person or with pictures or video calls) where your puppy lives, where it was born, where it grew up, and you can ask any question you want and know the answer comes from a knowledgeable source."

Kanzaidy of SZ Pomskies has a warning about pet store transparency: "Most of the time when you ask the pet store owners where the dog came from it is very hush hush. They do not provide any proof the dog is the breed they claim as well as no proof of where the dog came from." A reputable Pomsky breeder is the opposite. They will happily invite you to visit, introduce you to the parent dogs, and answer every question about your future puppy.

Supporting puppy mill breeding makes for less happy puppies that will continue to be mass produced." Reason 3: A Good Breeder Is With You for Life

Once you leave the pet store with your puppy, the relationship is over. A reputable Pomsky breeder is with you for life.

Raising a Pomsky is not easy. This is a high-energy Pomeranian and Siberian Husky mix with strong personalities on both sides of the family tree. You are going to have questions, and your breeder is the most knowledgeable resource you have.

Chree of Mountain Shadow Pomskies explains, "When the family has questions or is in need of some help, the breeder knows the pups and knows what to do. They help the client walk through the issues instead of giving up on the pup. The breeder has experience which can't be bought and they have special tricks for helping."

There is also the guarantee gap. Pet stores rarely offer meaningful health guarantees, breed guarantees, or lifetime support. Sharlee of Chinook Pomskies points out: "Most pet stores don't offer health guarantees and they are often unregistered dogs at best (puppy mill dogs at worst). There is no way to know what kinds of issues will arise." Every reputable Pomsky breeder offers a written health guarantee and DNA verification confirming that your puppy is genuinely a Pomsky.

Final Thoughts

Kanzaidy of SZ Pomskies says it best: "We all know this is an expensive breed. Don't buy because it's convenient. If you do you are going to end up with a dog that is aggressive, not social, has many underlying health issues such as luxating patellas, hip dysplasia and heart issues."

A Pomsky is a 12 to 15 year commitment. The extra effort of buying from a reputable breeder pays back every day of that commitment: healthier genetics, better temperament, proper socialization, and a mentor who is with you for the whole journey.
